Preparing for Flu Season: What You Need to Know
As fall approaches, so does flu season. Taking time to learn about influenza, prevention, and vaccination options can help you make informed decisions about your health and the health of your family.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. While flu activity varies from season to season, cases typically increase during the fall and winter months.
When Is Flu Season?
Flu viruses circulate throughout the year, but according to the CDC, flu activity in the United States most commonly peaks between December and February, although significant activity can continue into the spring.
Because it takes approximately two weeks after vaccination for the body to develop immune protection, the CDC recommends that most people who need only one dose of flu vaccine for the season receive it in September or October.
Who Should Get a Flu Vaccine?
The CDC recommends annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months of age and older, with rare exceptions. Individual recommendations may vary based on age, health history, allergies, and other factors. If you have questions about whether a flu vaccine is appropriate for you, talk with your healthcare provider.
