Celebrating National Hospice and Palliative Care Month

Peterson-hospice-teamKerrville, TX Throughout the month of November, Peterson Hospice will be joining organizations across the nation in hosting community activities recognizing National Hospice and Palliative Care Month (HAPCM). This year’s HAPCM theme is “Courageous Conversations.”

For more than 40 years, hospice has helped provide interdisciplinary, supportive care to millions of people, allowing them to spend their final months wherever they call home and surrounded by their loved ones. Hospice teams craft plans of care that ensure pain management, therapies, and treatments all center on the patients’ and their loved ones’ goals and wishes. Hospice care also provides emotional support and advice to help family members become confident caregivers and adjust to the future with grief support for up to a year.

“National Hospice and Palliative Care Month provides an opportunity for patients, providers, and community members alike to engage in advance care planning and other important discussions about the care they wish to receive when facing a serious illness before the time of crisis,” said Ben Marcantonio, COO and interim CEO of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO). We believe everyone deserves a good death, and the way to get there is through courageous conversations.”

Each year, more than one million Medicare beneficiaries receive care from hospices across the United States. When a patient is not eligible for hospice care, they may benefit from community-based palliative care, often offered by hospice providers. Palliative care is patient and family-centered care that optimizes quality of life by anticipating, preventing, and treating suffering. Palliative care throughout the continuum of illness also involves addressing physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and spiritual needs while facilitating patient autonomy through access to information and choice.

“When you engage in courageous conversations about end of life with your loved ones, it allows validation not only for their wishes at end of life, but also a beautiful conversation about what matters the most to them,” says Gretchen Rye, Community Outreach Coordinator for Peterson Hospice. “These conversations can be difficult to initiate, but November is a natural time to discuss gratitude and grace in a season of change. It was a gift my parents gave to me sharing what mattered to them at the end, and when the time came, I knew they were being cared for in the way they desired. It changed the dynamic from being a burden to a loving gift.”

Peterson Home Health Launches Compassion Fund to Assist Patients in Times of Need

Kerrville, TX – Over the past 10 years, the Peterson Hospice Blessing Fund has provided assistance to more than 350 patients and their families. It is funded solely through generous donations and is restricted to Hospice patients with the requests being distributed through committee oversight. The Blessing Fund has allowed us to provide a variety of services ranging from big ticket items to less expensive needs, resulting in enhanced quality of life for patients and their families. Our success initiated efforts to establish the Home Health Compassion Fund to specifically serve our Home Health patients.

At Peterson Home Health, we have the unique opportunity to truly step into another individual’s world. Home Health provides skilled care, companionship, and meets the needs of those who were recently discharged from the hospital and are still recovering. Our patients open their homes and allow us into some of the most vulnerable areas of their lives. This is a privilege. While we are referred to provide medical care, we take pride in the opportunity to provide personal care, getting to know our patients and developing relationships that go beyond bandages and medications.

We recently cared for an elderly patient living in a dilapidated home. She and her husband lived in that home for many years until both the home and their health were showing decline. The patient was primarily bedbound but could collect enough energy to assist in transferring herself into a wheelchair with the help of her husband of 55 years. Home Health was referred by her physician to provide occupational and physical therapy, focusing on basic strengthening exercises and transfer skills to ensure safety.

After years on a fixed income and experiencing both declining health and an aging home, the patient’s limitations grew. Her ability to access the bathroom as well as the shower became physically impossible. Without funds to make wheelchair modifications, the patient and her spouse were left with limited choices. Their solution was for her husband to wheel her out into the backyard and run a garden hose as a makeshift shower. Peterson Home Health was able to provide personal hygiene care while in the home, however, with an established Compassion Fund, the bathroom could have easily been modified to allow her the dignity to bathe in the privacy of her own home while supporting the couple to remain as independent as possible.

As the only non-profit Home Health agency in the Hill Country, Peterson Health will turn no one away from compassionate care. With your generous support of the Compassion Fund, we will be able to help our patients in ways no one else does. We can treat the whole patient, allowing every person receiving Home Health services to achieve a better health outcome and an improved quality of life.

Peterson Regional Medical Center Receives Level IV Acute Stroke Ready Designation

Kerrville, TX – Peterson Regional Medical Center has been designated as an Acute Stroke Ready (Level IV) Facility in Trauma Service Area-P by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). This designation represents Peterson Health’s commitment to quality care and the vital role the hospital provides to the Texas Hill Country community.

Peterson Health is one of only eight facilities in Texas to receive the distinguished rank of Level IV Acute Stroke Ready designation. “I am very proud to work with all of our teams that care for Stroke patients here at Peterson Health,” said Darin Smith, Peterson’s Director of Clinical Programs. “They work exceptionally hard to ensure each patient who presents to the ED with Stroke symptoms is evaluated and treated rapidly in order to have the best outcome and recovery from a Stroke.”

In 2005, Senate Bill 330 was passed with the purpose of developing a state emergency stroke treatment system that allows responders to identify and transport a person with acute stroke signs and symptoms to an appropriate designated facility. The hospital designation requirements were established to ensure prompt and appropriate treatment for possible stroke victims.

On February 17, 2022, updated stroke designation rules went into effect and requirements now include an Advanced Stroke Center designation which differentiates hospitals that can provide thrombectomy procedures but are not a Comprehensive Center. The four levels of stroke designation are Level I – Comprehensive, Level II – Advanced, Level III – Primary, and Level IV – Acute Stroke Ready.

The EMS/Trauma Systems Section of DSHS works with hospitals and Regional Advisory Councils (RACs) to develop facility designation protocols, develop policies and guidelines, and improve the overall care and outcomes of stroke patients.

The Acute Stroke Ready Level IV designation is the most recent accolade attained by Peterson Health. For more information about the Texas Department of State Health Services Stroke Designation, visit www.DSHS.Texas.Gov.

Peterson Health Cardiac Rehabilitation Program Certified by Industry Leader

Kerrville, TX – Peterson Health is proud to announce the certification of its cardiac rehabilitation program by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). This certification is recognition of Peterson Health’s commitment to improving the quality of life of patients by enhancing standards of care.

“Accreditation from AACVPR is a big milestone for our Cardiac Rehab team,” says Jason Loftin, Director of Heart and Vascular Services at Peterson Health. “We pride ourselves on the progress and positive outcomes of our patients, and this accolade is a testament to that dedication to quality care.”

Cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation programs are designed to help people with cardiovascular problems (e.g., heart attacks, coronary artery bypass graft surgery) and pulmonary problems (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD], respiratory symptoms) recover faster and live healthier. Both programs include exercise, education, counseling, and support for patients and their families.

To earn accreditation, Peterson Health’s cardiac rehabilitation program participated in an application process that requires extensive documentation of the program’s practices. AACVPR Program Certification is the only peer-review accreditation process designed to review individual programs for adherence to standards and guidelines developed and published by AACVPR and other related professional societies. Each program’s application is reviewed by the AACVPR Program Certification Committee, and certification is awarded by the AACVPR Board of Directors.

In 2018, AACVPR moved to an outcomes-based process with performance measurements that represent more meaningful outcomes. Therefore, AACVPR-certified programs are leaders in the cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation field because they offer the most advanced practices available and have proven track records of high-quality patient care. AACVPR Program Certification is valid for three years.

About AACVPR – Founded in 1985, the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) is a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to the mission of reducing morbidity, mortality, and disability from cardiovascular and pulmonary disease through education, prevention, rehabilitation, research, and disease management. Central to the core mission is improving the quality of life for patients and their families. Learn more about AACVPR at www.AACVPR.org.

Peterson Health Achieves Medicare’s Five-Star Quality Recognition

Kerrville, TX – Peterson Health achieved a five-star rating in the latest Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Quality Star Rating report, released in July. This cycle 3,076 hospitals received a rating from CMS with only 16% receiving the coveted five-star rating. “The primary objective of the Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating project is to summarize information from existing quality measures reported on Care Compare in a way that is useful and easy to interpret for patients and consumers through the development of a statistically sound methodology,” states CMS in their report of July 2023 rankings.

The Quality Star Rating evaluates hospitals on a series of quality metrics including mortality, safety of care, readmissions, patient experience, and timeliness and effectiveness of care. “Our team has worked very hard to ensure our community receives the best and safest possible care, and we are thrilled to have our efforts recognized by CMS,” said Elaine Ivey, Peterson’s Director of Quality Services. “It doesn’t happen by accident, everything we do is with purpose.”

“These types of achievements are not possible unless the entire team is on board. I’m so proud of their hard work and dedication. They truly care about each and every person that walks through our doors, and they take quality and safety very seriously. We know people want and need a healing environment, and the last thing they want to worry about is the quality of their hospital. This recognition affirms that Peterson Health is providing exceptional, world-class care,” said Cory Edmondson, President and CEO of Peterson Health.

The CMS Five-Star rating is the most recent accolade attained by Peterson Health. You can see a comprehensive list of awards and recognition here: Awards and Accolades. For more information about the CMS Hospital Quality Star Rating, visit www.medicare.gov/care.

Physical Therapy Pool to Close Permanently

Kerrville, TX – The Peterson Health Pevehouse Ambulatory Care Center therapy pool will officially close effective July 28. Jim LeRoux, Assistant Director of Outpatient Rehab, said they will no longer offer aquatic therapy, citing aging infrastructure. “The pool area of our Ambulatory Care Center needs significant updates to meet our standards. We have determined that given the cost of renovation relative to the amount of patient care it provides, it is just not financially feasible to keep it open. Patient use of the pool has dwindled over time as other therapy treatment methods have proven more effective,” said LeRoux.

“This will impact a very small percentage of patients that currently benefit from aquatic therapy,” LeRoux said. “We feel the future of our services are heading toward sports therapy so repurposing the pool space for those types of programs will give us more opportunities for future growth.”

Recognizing the need for an alternative, LeRoux cited the option for patients to utilize the AlterG anti-gravity treadmill at Peterson Health Rehab Services as it can simulate an anti-gravity pool environment.

The AlterG treadmill provides patients with a painless, controlled, low-weight bearing form of exercise through a unique unweighting process utilizing a differential air pressure technique developed by NASA. The air pressure comfortably lifts the user and allows the ability to walk or run at a fraction of the body weight. The anti-gravity of the treadmill provides a boost for athletes and rehabilitation patients to shorten recovery time, reduce injury risk, and enhance athletic performance.

“Just one of the many benefits of the the AlterG treadmill includes the ability for patients to rehabilitate from injuries with less pain and impact,” LeRoux said.

Peterson Health is planning major renovations to the Pevehouse Ambulatory Care Center once the new Amanda and J. David Williams Surgery Center opens in Spring of 2024. The plans include significant expansion of therapy and imaging services.
